Abstract

The social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental dynamics of the countries in Latin America have enabled them to share realities and issues, as well as to address joint challenges in light of the global, regional, and local issues faced by the region. Currently, various matters concentrate the interest of academia and regional governments: persistent inequalities between population groups and the poverty associated with such inequality; the consolidation and fragility of democratic systems; social movements and activism aimed at raising awareness of decisions that threaten the well-being of communities; the persistence of gender-based violence; the environmental crisis and climate change as a result of extractivism and human activity; the migration crisis and human mobility impacting the continent; and access to fundamental rights such as education and healthcare. All of these are issues that form part of research agendas and public policies aimed at improving the living conditions of the population in Latin America through the construction of knowledge. Some of the mentioned issues have been worsened or accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, making it impossible to reduce their impacts in terms of deaths, as it directly and indirectly affected various dimensions of life in the region.
