For evaluators

Manuscripts must meet all the selection criteria specified in the terms of reference in order to pass the first phase of editorial review. Once they pass this phase, they are submitted for peer review (double-blind).

The editorial team will contact potential reviewers—based on the subject of the manuscript—who will form the scientific committee for the volume to be published. A minimum of two reviewers will be assigned to each manuscript.

The double-blind process means that authors will not know which reviewer was assigned to their article (anonymity is essential), and similarly, reviewers will not know who they are evaluating, in order to avoid conflicts of interest.

Once the reviewers have accepted, the manuscript will be sent in a Word format, excluding any information linking the manuscript to its authors. The evaluation form and editorial policies will also be sent, along with instructions to complete the evaluation within a maximum period of 20 days. There is a possibility that a reviewer may take longer than the stipulated time or may withdraw from the process, which would require restarting part of the phase. The average time for the entire evaluation process—from finding reviewers to receiving the review feedback from the editorial team—is 30 days.

The completed evaluation forms will be reviewed during an editorial team meeting, where, through a resolution, it will be decided whether the manuscript proceeds to the editing process, is rejected, or if any actions need to be taken in case of controversy (see "Possible outcomes" below). These decisions cannot be contested (see "Controversial cases" below).

The results of the evaluations and the decision on whether the manuscript will continue in the process will be communicated to the corresponding author (see "Authorship" in Editorial Policies) within two months of the completion of the terms of reference dissemination.

The selection of reviewers is based on their experience and field of expertise; that is, articles are evaluated by researchers with a recognized academic background who demonstrate current production (articles published in the last five years at least) and expertise in the subject matter. Additionally, the Revista Ciencias y Humanidades, through its team and editorial committee, will ensure that the reviewers are external to the institution (see "Reviewers" below).

The evaluation of manuscripts is done quantitatively, with a score of 0.0 to 5.0 across four axes, each with different evaluation criteria. The minimum score required for a manuscript to be approved for publication is 3.5 weighted points. The evaluation form includes the following criteria:

  • Article quality: clarity, relevance of the methodology used (conceptual and methodological rigor), optimal use of the various sections of the article (abstract, introduction, problem statement, development, conclusions, references), solid research process, coherence.
  • Contribution to knowledge: relevance in the field, feedback in the epistemic area, pertinence.
  • Authorship contributions: clear, critical, and differentiated contributions from other texts, relevance to the field.
  • Bibliographic management: guarantee against plagiarism, current bibliographic sources, relevance in research sources.

The possible results of the evaluation are specified under "Possible outcomes." Both the reviewer’s and the editorial team's comments must be considered by the corresponding author, who is responsible for making the necessary adjustments. These changes and corrections should be made within the indicated timeframe, which is generally one week (7 days). After receiving the modified article, the editorial team will verify that the recommended changes have been applied within a week (7 days), and if the changes are approved, the process will continue with the final editorial review phase, which typically lasts between two and three weeks (15-20 days).

Articles will be subject to both stylistic and content corrections. They will also undergo a layout and design process; the corresponding author must confirm receipt of the revised version, which will be sent as a PDF file with the article's layout. If necessary, they should notify the editorial team of any possible errors within a maximum of 3 business days after receiving the document.

The editorial team will determine which manuscripts will be published and in which issue. It is worth noting that it is possible for articles to be published in the two subsequent issues after the terms of reference have been disseminated. The assignment of articles to each issue will respect the order in which submissions are received within each open call. It is important to note that the journal is in permanent call.

The publication date of the article will be met as long as the corresponding author submits all required documentation within the specified timeframe. If not, the publication of the article may be postponed to the next issue or, in case of absence (failure to communicate with the editorial team for one month), the publication could be halted.

Possible outcomes

  • Accepted without changes: The manuscript has been accepted by the scientific committee with no changes and moves to the final review phase.
  • Accepted with changes: The manuscript will continue through the editorial process once the corresponding author submits the requested changes. For formal changes, the manuscript will be reviewed by the editorial team, which will ensure that the changes were applied correctly. For minor content changes, the manuscript will be re-evaluated by the scientific committee.
  • Rejected: The article will not be published in the call for which it was submitted.

Controversial cases

The Revista Ciencias y Humanidades holds regular editorial team meetings. In these spaces, the evaluations of manuscripts made by the scientific committee are reviewed. In cases where two evaluations suggest different recommendations regarding publication, a quantitative averaging of the evaluation scores will be done, and a careful qualitative assessment of the evaluations will be conducted. If the controversy persists, the manuscript will be sent to an academic peer who was not involved in the process. The new evaluation will be discussed during an editorial team session, where a decision will be made, via a resolution, on whether the manuscript is accepted with changes or rejected. Rejection means that all ethical procedure guarantees have been exhausted, and therefore, this decision cannot be appealed.

Transfer of rights and unpublished works

To ensure an ethical and transparent research process, the Revista Ciencias y Humanidades requires authors to confirm that the reproduction and reprint rights for the published article belong to the editorial entity.

Reviewers

Those who review:

  • Are selected by the editorial team and the committee, and must be external to the publishing entity.
  • Must adhere to rigor in evaluating the articles submitted for their review.
  • Must inform the editorial team in case of a conflict of interest so that a timely change of reviewer can be made and the process can continue.
  • Must explain their assessments of the articles sent to them, properly completing the evaluation form.
  • Must report any clear findings or suspicions of plagiarism (or self-plagiarism), duplicate publications, and/or falsification or manipulation of data.
