Ignoring Latin American poetry is an extraordinary fact in our times. Even more so if the person doing so resides on the continent. The resonance of Mexican, Argentine, Cuban, Chilean, and other poets marks the dimensions of each latitude with grandiloquence. Sometimes, we hear in their verses the misfortunes of a people, the call to arms; at other times, existential unease, the controversies of the intimate. While this genre may be considered highly produced, we cannot say the same about its reading. Poetry demands to be read between the lines to be appreciated, as it unfolds the poet’s sensitivity by splashing it onto the paper. Its level of symbolism refracts multiple meanings of the real, dissolving deterministic communication.
